CO2-Savings in the Automotive Industry

The Challenge

As part of an energy and environmental initiative, Daimler launched a comprehensive CO2 reduction and sustainability program.

Part of this program deals with the planning, communication and management of CO2 emissions in the production process.

The Mission

The sustainability solution enables targeted planning and management of savings goals and successes across all sites and series..

At the same time, the software serves as a reconciliation solution and for the communication of savings targets and key figures, which are considered binding for the respective site and product managers.

The Technology

The software was initially a “Monster Excel sheet” created by McKinsey, which was a good basis for the development of the idea, but in the end in practical use was hardly operable and impossible to maintain.

In the first generations the solution was therefore developed with MS Access as frontend and MS SQL as backend. This approach was amazingly long alive. In the further course, we then ported the solution to SharePoint 2013 to reflect the operation on the standard platform at Daimler.

How to

Because McKinsey’s processes and algorithms were buried deep in Excel sheet formulas in the Excel model, we first had to extract the actual technical concept and algorithms from the Excel sheets and translate a concept that can be mapped into maintainable and scalable software.

Since no processes were mapped in Excel, but the operation required the specific conditional use of certain columns and cells depending on other columns and cells, we coordinated the best possible user experience (UX) with representative users before the actual software creation and then integrated them into MS Access shown. That at that time did not produce any nice surfaces is another matter …

In further steps, we then developed test machines to test the complex processes regressively, since even small errors in the algorithms can lead to large distortions.

With the introduction of the software, the software then went into the regular maintenance process.

Conclusion

The system is now in use in the 6th generation and has proven itself extensively. Despite enormous changes in the environment of the software solutions, our solution is still in use.
